Mediterranean Wetland Week in Ston

The three-day event brought together representatives of the professional and scientific community, institutions, and the interested public with the aim of exchanging knowledge and raising awareness about the importance of preserving freshwater ecosystems. Through a series of expert lectures and discussions, the results of the implementation of the LIFE for Mauremys project were presented, with special emphasis on activities focused on the protection of the Balkan terrapin as an umbrella species of Mediterranean wetland habitats.

As part of the programme, a seminar and panel discussion on sustainable fishing in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County was held, during which participants discussed the challenges and opportunities related to the management of fish resources in the Neretva, Konavočica, and Ljuta areas. In addition, an agricultural seminar dedicated to eco-innovations for small-scale farming areas was organised, aiming to encourage sustainable agricultural practices.

Alongside the expert programme, the event also included educational and recreational activities for children, further contributing to raising awareness about the importance of nature protection and biodiversity conservation.

By organising the Mediterranean Wetland Week event, the importance of connecting science, professional expertise, and the local community in order to preserve and protect valuable freshwater ecosystems and strictly protected species was once again reaffirmed.
