Animated Film about the Balkan Terrapin

The animated film “Mara – A Life for New Generations”, produced by the Šipan Film School, was created in collaboration with the Zagreb Zoo and tells the story of a brave Balkan terrapin named Mara.

After her pond in Majkovi dried up, Mara embarks on the adventure of a lifetime, traveling from her home in the far south of Croatia to Zagreb in order to save her species from numerous challenges!

The first frames of this animated film were shaped last summer by children during an animation workshop on the island of Šipan. Their creativity inspired professionals who, in cooperation with partners in the LIFE for Mauremys project, completed this remarkable animation dedicated to the conservation of our native freshwater turtle species.

The film premiered at the open-air cinema in the Šipan harbor on August 5, 2025, during the opening of the 22nd Šipan Summer Film School.
