Zoological Garden of Zagreb
Zoological Garden of Zagreb is situated in the protected area of Maksimir Park, an area protected as a monument of park architecture, declared in 1884. The Zoological Garden itself was founded in 1925. in the southern part of the park territory that includes the lakes and puddles of the area. In addition to caring for exotic animals, the Zoological Garden conducts various educational events with the aim of spreading knowledge and understanding of the protection and preservation of native species, as well as scientific research and animal protection activities, with the main mission of breeding programs for endangered species.
Zagreb Zoo is a big part of the cultural and natural heritage of the City of Zagreb, as evidenced by the fact that it is one of the most visited places in Croatia.
Extensive experience of the staff and the appropriate infrastructure make it the best possible institution for implementation of the planned breeding program for Mauremys rivulata. The planned breeding station will contain two outdoor pools for animals, and a new glasshouse with public educational point. To raise awareness about the importance of Balkan Terrapin conservation, a number of events, including Mauremys Days will be held at the Zoological Garden of Zagreb.
