Konavosko field
Konavosko field is a project area completely located within the Natura 2000 area of Sniježnica and Konavosko field. This project area is of special importance for the international protection of the Balkan Terrapin because it represents a link between the Croatian and the southern Balkan populations.
Mauremys rivulata first literature quotation in the area of Konavle dates back to 1997. and since then it has been recorded in all future research in the area. It has been found in 24 puddles, irrigation canals and the Konavočica river. Due to the great diversity of habitats, Balkan Terrapin is spread over a large area here, which reduces the impact of human activities on the species. The population in Konavosko polje is therefore the most stable and numerous, compared to populations in other project areas.
Balkan Terrapin spends most of its time in water, nests in meadows and fields near its aquatic habitat, and uses a network of canals for migration.
The main goal in this project area is to improve the connectivity of the ponds in the Konavosko field, by restoring those canals. In addition, the quality of the habitat will be improved by the installation of new turtle sunbathing areas. Project activities in this area will create sustainable habitats for the long-term survival of the species.
