Prljevići pond

Together with Zabređe hamlet ponds, the pond in Prljevići is a part of the first herpetological reserve in Croatia.

The pond in Prljevići is full of sludge from rotting organic matter falling in the pond from the surrounding trees, and in order to reduce eutrophication, part of the trees was removed during the cleaning operation.

The pond is shallow, has an unpleasant smell, and is covered with a lot of branches, so urgent cleaning activities are needed.

Nesting sites are present next to the pond, in gardens and olive groves, but some of them have been excavated by the wild boars. Area containing a pond, garden and a meadow, will be secured nesting sites, protected from predators by the use of repellents. The promotion of sustainable agricultural practices will benefit not only the Balkan Terrapin, but also indirectly other plant and animal species present in the area.
