Neretva Delta

Within the project area Neretva Delta there are six Natura 2000 reserves - five ornithological reserves (Modro oko and Lake Desne, Kuti, Prud, Orepak and Pod Gredom), the Estuary of the Neretva ornithological-ichthyologic reserve and the significant landscape Predolac-Šibenica. The Neretva River Delta is recognized by the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, 1971.) as a freshwater area of international importance.

This area is included in the project because it is one of the four Natura 2000 areas of importance for Balkan Terrapin, and also for European pond turtle, Emys orbicularis, in Croatia. However, it’s importance is likely relatively lower than expected, compared to the other five project areas, because previous research and population size estimates could not confirm the presence of Balkan Terrapin in this area.

Nevertheless, due to its size, microhabitat diversity and biodiversity, this rich Mediterranean freshwater area has potential importance for the target species.

The Neretva Delta will be a pilot area for testing turtle friendly fyke nets that reduce turtle bycatch, workshops and establishing cooperation with local fishermen. Also, the presence of the Balkan Terrapin will be investigated further to ensure the best preparation for population recovery.
