Join Us for a Mauremys Day

On Sunday, May 25, 2025, we will celebrate Mauremys Day at the Zagreb Zoo.

An educational program will take place from 10 AM to 2 PM in the Interpretation Center for Croatia’s Protected Fauna. Visitors will have the chance to get up close with several species of turtles. Educators will explain why the Balkan Terrapin (Mauremys rivulata) is among the most endangered reptiles in Europe and what is being done in Croatia to protect its habitat.

Visitors will be able to watch the first animated film about the Balkan Terrapin, created last year during the Šipan Summer Film School, read picture books, and play a themed memory game. Children can also view an exhibition of artwork created by their peers on the topic of turtles and the threats they face.

At 11 AM, 12 PM, 1 PM, and 2 PM, guided tours of the Education and Breeding Center will be available. This center was built as part of the LIFE for Mauremys project. Covering 200 square meters, it serves to educate the public and breed hatchlings for repopulation in the wild following habitat restoration efforts in the Ston area.

Exciting activities related to the Balkan Terrapin will also continue next week during Turtle Week. From Monday to Friday, visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about these elusive reptiles.
