New Basking Platforms Installed in Balkan Terrapin Habitats

As part of ongoing efforts to conserve the Balkan Terrapin, we have installed new basking platforms in selected ponds located within three Natura 2000 sites. These freshwater turtles rely on access to suitable basking areas where they can leave the water, warm themselves in the sun, and dry their shells. Regular basking is essential for their health, as it helps prevent the growth of fungi and the accumulation of algae, which can lead to shell rot if left untreated.

Unfortunately, many ponds are currently neglected and overgrown, with dense vegetation along the shores making it difficult or even impossible for turtles to exit the water. Additionally, in some locations, invasive species such as the red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta) have appeared. These larger and more dominant turtles often take over the best basking spots, further threatening the survival of our native species.

By installing new basking platforms, we aim to provide our native Balkan Terrapin—as well as the native European Pond Turtle (Emys orbicularis)—with more suitable and safe areas to bask. To minimize ecological impact, all platforms were built from solid, natural wood, treated for durability, and securely anchored to the bottom to ensure stability without disturbing the surrounding habitat.

This habitat enhancement complements other conservation efforts, including habitat restoration, clean-up actions, the construction of tunnel serving as ecological corridor, and the installation of informational signs for visitors about appropriate behavior at these valuable sites.

Though small in scale, this intervention plays an important role in preserving the biodiversity of aquatic habitats and supporting the health of our native turtle populations.
