LIFE for Mauremys at Science Festivals
This spring, the LIFE for Mauremys project was featured at two major science events – the MUZZA Science Week (April 10–13, 2025) and the Science Festival (May 5–10, 2025) in Zagreb. Through engaging exhibitions and interactive content, visitors were introduced to the goals of the project and the importance of conserving the Balkan Terrapin (Mauremys rivulata) and its habitats.
At the MUZZA Science Week, Tena Radočaj and student Leon from the Faculty of Agriculture presented “turtle-friendly” fishing traps specifically designed to reduce accidental capture of protected freshwater turtle species. Visitors had the opportunity to see these innovative tools up close, learn more about the Balkan terrapin, and discover how scientific solutions can contribute to biodiversity conservation. Special emphasis was placed on the need to adapt fishing gear to reduce the negative impact on sensitive species living in aquatic ecosystems within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
At the Science Festival held at the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, Dragica Šalamon, Ivan Špelić, and Ana Gavrilović joined Tena and Leon to present the activities of the LIFE for Mauremys project in the context of this year’s theme – “Intelligence.” In addition to promotional and educational materials and a demonstration of fishing traps adapted to the ecological requirements of the Natura 2000 network, a traveling exhibition about freshwater turtles was also displayed. Originally designed for young visitors, the exhibition attracted audiences of all ages.
The focus was on intelligent and sustainable solutions for the protection of freshwater ecosystems, with particular attention drawn to fishing methods that minimize harm to sensitive species. Visitors showed great interest, asked questions, and engaged in learning about the role of fishers in preserving biodiversity.
Participation in both festivals once again highlighted the importance of connecting scientific knowledge with the public. Through education, hands-on demonstrations, and open dialogue with visitors, we raise awareness about the necessity of nature conservation and the role each of us can play in protecting vulnerable species and their habitats. Our innovations are the result of expert teamwork and represent a tangible contribution to the sustainable use of natural resources.
