The Pond Keeper Program for Residents of Ston, Majkovi, and Konavle

What Is It About?

Have you ever seen a Balkan Terrapin basking near a pond or skillfully swimming in the calm waters of the Ljuta River? Maybe you used to spot them more often than you do today? Estimates from 2019 suggest that only about 450 individuals remain in Croatia. The largest population is in Konavle Field, followed by three ponds in the Majkovi area, and just a few individuals in Ston Field. Project partners are inviting the local community to join the effort!

Why Get Involved?

Your observations can make a crucial difference! Every report helps scientists protect the last remaining populations of the Balkan Terrapin and preserve their habitats. It is also useful to record other plant and animal species in the area. Biodiversity and the presence of certain species can indicate the health of the ecosystem, helping experts identify key areas for conservation actions where they are most needed, ensuring long-term preservation of our natural heritage.

How Can You Participate?

Do you know of a pond where you have seen freshwater turtles? Maybe that pond no longer exists, is in poor condition, or is still in good shape but has fewer turtles than before… Let us know about any pond—regardless of its condition, with or without turtles! Such information helps in planning pond restoration, which is essential for the survival of the Balkan Terrapin.

Become a Pond Keeper and report your valuable findings—photos and locations where you have seen the Balkan Terrapin or its nests—via email or the Biologer app. Additionally, you can use the Invasive Species in Croatia app to report sightings of red-eared sliders, mongooses, or other invasive and harmful species.
