International LIFE Amphicon conference

At Podsreda Castle in Kozjansko Nature Park, on November 14 and 15, 2024, the second international conference of the LIFE AMPHICON project was held, bringing together experts, researchers, and enthusiasts from various countries to exchange knowledge and experiences on the conservation of amphibians and their habitats.

Participants had the opportunity to attend lectures in three thematic blocks: conservation of species and strengthening amphibian populations, restoration and improvement of their habitats, and the impact of roads on amphibians. The diverse program and inspiring presentations sparked discussions about challenges and future steps in protecting these endangered species.

In the Jovsi area, part of the Natura 2000 site Dobrava – Jovsi, suitable aquatic and terrestrial habitats for amphibians have been established on purchased land over the past few years. Additionally, efforts have been made to strengthen the population of the Italian crested newt (Triturus carnifex) through controlled breeding and releasing individuals into the wild. These examples of best practices provide concrete guidelines for successful habitat restoration and conservation of endangered species.

In conclusion, the LIFE AMPHICON conference highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and collaboration among scientists, institutions, and local communities. The inspiring examples from the LIFE AMPHICON project and discussions on the challenges in amphibian conservation provided valuable insights that will also benefit the LIFE for Mauremys project. Our team from the Hyla Association returned from the conference enriched with new knowledge and ideas, which will be applied to activities related to the conservation of freshwater habitats and endangered species, such as the Balkan Terrapin (Mauremys rivulata).
