Contract Signed for the Development of the Freshwater Turtle Reception Point
As part of the LIFE for Mauremys project, a contract was signed at the Ranjina Palace with the contractor for the development of the Point for Temporary Freshwater Turtle Reception and Volunteer Training. The contract was signed by the director of the Public Institution for the Management of Protected Natural Areas of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Marijana Miljas Đuračić, and a representative of the company Obraz Građenje, in the presence of County Prefect Nikola Dobroslavić.
This important investment, worth over 105,000 euros, is a crucial step in implementing the LIFE for Mauremys project, which aims to improve the conservation status and long-term sustainability of the Balkan Terrapin (Mauremys rivulata) population in the Mediterranean biogeographical region. The project focuses on the restoration and maintenance of a network of Mediterranean temporary and permanent aquatic habitats, significant for biodiversity conservation in Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
'With this project, we not only promote the work of our institution but also highlight the importance of nature conservation and biodiversity preservation. Dubrovnik-Neretva County invests in various sectors, from education and culture to health and sports, and environmental protection is equally an important part of our strategy. I congratulate everyone involved and look forward to continuing our collaboration', stated Prefect Dobroslavić at the signing.
The Temporary Freshwater Turtle Reception Point represents key infrastructure for the protection of this endangered species, enabling temporary care for turtles that have been rescued or injured, all with the aim of their rehabilitation and return to their natural habitat.
