Second Mauremys Day Held at Zagreb Zoo

On Saturday, June 1, 2024, Zagreb Zoo visitors had the opportunity to participate in the second Mauremys Day. Partners presented new educational materials like puzzles and memory games, while the youngest creatives painted their DIY models of native freshwater turtle species.

Visitors had the chance to learn about the diversity of turtles by observing live specimens of the Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni), the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), and of course, the Balkan terrapin (Mauremys rivulata). In the Zoo's canals, many red-eared sliders (Trachemys sp.) were basking, providing educators the opportunity to highlight the differences between these species and the importance of correctly identifying them.

Turtle-themed artwork from all over Croatia was displayed at a creative exhibition, and visitors voted twelve-year-old Livija from Vukovar as the best artist. Artists who visited us in person to enjoy the exhibition of their work, as well as those who received the most public votes, received gift packages with the project's promotional and educational materials.

Mauremys Day was further enhanced by colorful turtles sent by the group "Trešnjice" from Maksimir Kindergarten and the cheerful mascot Mara.

We look forward to the next Mauremys Day!
