Educational and promotional activities in May and June of 2024
May 23, World Turtle Day, is just around the corner. The LIFE for Mauremys project dedicates this day to educational and promotional activities centered around two main events: the First Three-Day event in Majkovi – Mediterranean Wetland Week, taking place from May 23 to May 25, 2024, and the second Mauremys Day at the Zagreb Zoo, scheduled for June 1, 2024. In addition to workshops planned for these events, the entire month will be dedicated to the Balkan Terrapin. Partners are planning an educational field trip for volunteers to observe the trapping of invasive alien red-eared pond sliders on sunbathing platforms, an exhibition of creative artwork submitted by project followers, an online quiz about turtles, radio, and TV show appearances by our experts, and much more.
On Mauremys Day at Zagreb Zoo, kids will have the opportunity to meet the project's mascot, Mara the Balkan Terrapin, put together a puzzle depicting a special pond cleaning action, play a variety of memory games, vote for their favorite artwork in a popular vote art exhibition, observe different species of turtles, and ask experts working on the LIFE for Mauremys project anything they want to know about project activities.
The hosts of the Mediterranean Wetland Week, the Public Institution for the Management of Protected Areas of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, plan to visit primary schools in the project area and present the new visitor interpretation center of Dubrovačko primorje - "MAUREMYS," at the "Kuća meda i tradicijskih proizvoda Majkovi." On Saturday afternoon, there will be a final event for the local community where they can learn about the project, sustainable "turtle-friendly" agriculture, volunteering opportunities, taste local food, visit "Kuća meda," and enjoy educational workshops and entertainment for children.
